The DB1 determined level by measuring the pressure required to force bubbles (nitrogen or air) from a pair of submerged tubes. The submerged tubes were separated by a known fixed vertical distance. A single pressure transducer measured each tube and the atmospheric pressure. This technique compensated for temperature effects and long-term drift in the transducer, producing a more accurate measurement. Accuracy was ±0.05% full scale range.
